The Best Dressed List (and the worst): The Women of the 2012 Academy Awards

Viola Davis in Vera Wang– She has never, ever looked better. The color, the bust line and the cut of the dress: flawless. She came with her natural hair and not with one of her wigs. Good for her! The dress was the perfect complement to her new look. She looked positively regal. (If this shocks you, imagine what Beyonce really looks like, and then get over it.)

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace– Strike a pose. There’s nothing to it. I don’t see a bag with this dress. Is it because it’s a bag of bones? She is much, much too thin but this voluminous velvet dress is cut with such precision and balance that Angelina still looked stunning. The hair and makeup is superb.

Leslie Mann in Roberto Cavalli– Bleu away the competition.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen–This dress works for her. And she knows it. A huge risk that paid off big.

Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera–Finally, she looked as gorgeous as she is talented. She has never looked better.

Glenn Close in Zac Posen– The color was perfect but the jacket made it beyond chic, giving it a masculine Edwardian nod that was complete genius considering the role for which she was nominated. No, the jacket is not a gimmick here as was the coat in Gwenyth Paltrow’s Tom Ford “Hi, which way to the Royal wedding in Monaco” ensemble.

THE WORST DRESSED LIST
1 .Maya Rudolf in Johanna Johnson--She looked like she stole this dress from a 65 year old mother of the bride. Terrible makeup. (The entire cast of “Bridesmaids” came dressed as dreadful wedding guests/bridesmaids. Was it a performance piece? Discuss.)

2. Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad--Simply vulgar. She looked like a Kardashian presenting a porn industry award.

3. Kate Mara in Jack Guisso Couture. Did the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo beat her up in the limo parking lot? (Actually Kate looked like she did some damage of her own to sister Rooney Mara in the beatdown, but more about that in a subsequent post.)

4. Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli. Big Bow Peep lost all her sheep but found it necessary to keep this dress?

5.Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture--Didn’t we see the 100 year old bride in the news this week wearing this at the nursing home? Completely age inappropriate. (She looks older than Billy Crystal’s shtick. And just as anachronistically bland, if you consider how funny Chris Rock was in comparison.)
